About the Choir
The Detroit Concert Choir is Detroit’s premier, international award-winning choral ensemble, celebrated for artistic excellence, innovative programming, and inspiring performances. Founded in 1987 by Gordon Nelson, the choir has grown into one of the region’s leading choral organizations and has been under the artistic direction of Dr. Michael A. Mitchell since 2019.

With more than 90 auditioned singers representing over 35 metro Detroit communities, DCC presents a dynamic concert season featuring timeless masterworks, contemporary choral music, collaborations, and community appearances.

The DCC has shared the stage with renowned artists and organizations, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Josh Groban, Sarah Brightman, the Michigan Sinfonietta, the Oakland Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and many others. The choir has earned national and international recognition, including the prestigious “Choir of the World” title at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales and the Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence. Most recently, DCC represented the United States on an international concert tour through Venice, Slovenia, and Croatia.

As an activity of Detroit Performing Artists, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization, DCC continues to enrich lives through the transformative power of choral music, education, and community engagement.

Michael A. Mitchell, Artistic Director

Dr. Michael A. Mitchell has served as Artistic Director of the Detroit Concert Choir since June 2019, bringing dynamic leadership, creativity, and a distinctive artistic voice to the ensemble. Known for his inspiring energy, engaging style, and ability to bring out the best in singers, Dr. Mitchell creates a welcoming and joyful environment where musicians are challenged to grow and connect through music.

A respected conductor, educator, and composer, Dr. Mitchell has led ensembles throughout the United States and Europe. His thoughtful programming and commitment to meaningful musical experiences continue to shape the Detroit Concert Choir’s artistic journey.
